Things To Do in Auckland This Winter

Summer is easy – you grab your towel and some sunscreen and you’ve got a day of activities planned right there. Winter is a bit harder. You have to account for the cold, it getting dark earlier, the rain and the fact that no one really knows what to do when summer goes away for a while. I have picked a few ongoing event and activities in Auckland that you might not have known about that can fill up your winter days. Let me know if I’ve missed anything in the comments below! What are you up to this winter?

Streetfood Station

Where? Mt Albert Market, 847 New North Rd, Mt Albert

What? A weekly event with a revolving selection of Auckland’s best food trucks, craft beer and organic wine.

When? Every Friday night 5pm-9pm

How much? Free entry!

The Winter Night Sky

Where? Stardome Observatory & Planetarium, Royal Oak

What? A guided tour of the night sky in the 360-degree theatre. Lay back in the fully reclining chairs and learn about the stars, planets and constellations.

When? Wednesday to Sunday weekly until the end of August

How much? Adult $15.00

Sangria Saturdays

Where? Bellota, 91 Federal Street

What? An evening soaking up the atmosphere of Bellota. Spanish music, tapas and sangria – you’ll feel like it’s summer all over again.

When? Every Saturday evening 5pm-9pm until the end of July!

How much? Free entry

The Lighthouse by Michael Parekowhai

Where? Queens Wharf, Auckland CBD

What? Probably the best light installation I’ve ever seen! It’s basically a house perched right at the end of the wharf with neon lights and a massive statue in it. Sounds really random, but there is something so magical about it. You can only look through the windows, and every window gives you a different view! I recommend going around an hour before sunset!

When? Whenever ya bloody want!

How much? Free!

World Press Photo Exhibition

Where? Top floor of Smith & Caughey’s, Queen Street

What? Dubbed the World’s Best photo Exhibition, this exhibition is a result of a worldwide annual contest on press photography. The photos I’ve seen online look beautiful, so if you’re into photography then definitely head along.

When? Saturday 1st July – Sunday 30th July

How much? $15 weekdays, $18 weekends, $10 students

I hope this inspired you to think outside the box when you’re bored this winter! I know that all of these activities definitely float my boat! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

The Winter Night Sky is one thing I’ll do when I go to Melbourne, immediately.
