Finding the motivation to study or get through some work is hard enough, let alone doing it productively. Since my final semester of classes is exactly half way over, I thought I’d share the knowledge I’ve picked up throughout my degree. My degree is very challenging, I study business and there isn’t much room to fail so knowing what can get you through is key. Although this post will mostly talk about studying, my tips also translate well for those of you who work from home!
Studying isn’t something I’ve always been good at. I’ve always had trouble concentrating and actually making progress instead of wandering aimlessly through my notes. In saying that, studying is definitely a skill to be learnt and a great skill to keep. So, if you want to know my tips on how to be more productive when studying or working, keep on reading!
Find your study/work style
Finding your studying style is super important – this way, you will get the most out of a study sesh. Think about your surroundings, who you are with and what you will use. For me, an ideal working environment includes 1 or 2 others studying the same thing as me, in a quiet but not silent cafe where I am able to ask questions and have discussions if need be. Typing is my thing as well, written notes have just never worked for me, despite being a very visual learner.
Have a start point, and an end point
Knowing exactly where to start studying the moment you sit down, and having an end point to work towards is a sure fire way to make sure you get through a good amount of content. I usually tried to crack through around 3 chapters of study a day. This included reviewing notes, rewriting and studying unfamiliar concepts and completing background work.
Change up your environment
Majority of people I know don’t work well from home, so finding somewhere like a cafe can change the game. I also love working in my uni buildings. They have massive windows and you feel like you’re outside in the sun even if you’re 5 hours deep in a textbook.
Take a break..seriously!
Taking a break is the best thing you can do when you’re spending the day hunched over a computer or workbook. I get so stir crazy and feel like I’m trapped so I try and go for a walk to get some food or a drink every 3 hours or so.
Put the books away at the end of the day
I like to start studying at 8 or 9 in the morning, so that I can be done by 3 or 4pm This leaves me with plenty of time to relax and unwind at home knowing that I’ve completed a lot of work that day and don’t need to feel guilty for leaving my notes alone.
I hope these tips have given you some motivation, or at least nudged you in the right direction! Studying can be so hard, and so stressful, but it’s so worth it when those exam grades come back!
