My relationship with make up sponges has been tumultuous. Okay, dramatic but seriously! I bought one from Kmart like a year ago and it’s so bad. It’s the hardest thing in the world. It felt like I was smashing my face in with a rock every time I tried to use it. I quickly went back to my Jessup flat top kabuki brush and didn’t go near another sponge for a wee while.
When Real Techniques released this sponge I thought it was going to be such a gimick. Another branded sponge that doesn’t do much more than any other on the market. The thing that made me want to buy this sponge was the fact that brushes are such a nightmare to clean and they get gunked up with makeup so quickly. Sponges can be cleaned every time you use them, so that was a plus for me. I’m going to go through everything you need to know in order to make this purchase..though you won’t need much convincing!
This sponge made applying my foundation a lot easier than a brush. Because you’re dabbing rather than swiping, the foundation actually melts into your skin and looks a lot more natural whilst getting way more coverage on there. Great for applying cream highlight and concealer too!
Because I can wash this every time I use it I find this way more convenient than my brushes. It’s super bouncy and easily blends out my makeup in less than a minute.
Value for money
For only $19.99 NZD, this sponge is pretty good value for money. Considering a brush from a shop in NZ is around the $30 at the least, this sponge does a lot more for my makeup routine for less money/hassle.
Although I don’t like using this dry, you can definitely use it in more than one way. I mainly use it for foundation, after dampening it with either water (for a more natural look) or setting spray (for more full coverage). You can use the pointed end for concealer or small areas such as your eyes. The flat end is also great for cream products as mentioned before.
I know you’re probably running out of the door to buy this already, I recommend buying the two-pack by the way(!!), leave me a comment to let me know if you’ve tried this before.
As always, thanks for reading & love Lyd x
