Tattoos are a funny subject. People either love them or hate them, and boy do they tell you which end they stand on! I personally love tattoos..obviously haha. I grew up thinking tattoos were a part of someone. My dad is covered in colourful pieces of art that I loved looking at and making up stories about. He’s always taught me to do what I love and ignore what people think and tattoos are that “something” that I love.
Six months ago, before my 21st birthday I went for a consult with Seventh Day Studio in Auckland. Their Instagram is teeming with beautiful pieces of art and I knew this would be my studio. I met with Phoebe, and booked in with Hannah for the following week. To say I got along with Hannah is an understatement, she is just the funniest person, and so nice. Last week, Hannah did my second tattoo – peonies and leaves on my inner forearm and elbow. We spent the two hours cry laughing about god knows what! The entire team have a very chill vibe, so it’s hard not to relax.
What do your tattoos mean?
This is something I get asked allllll the time. They don’t have a meaning in the traditional sense, but they mean a lot to me as pieces of art that I wanted on my body forever. And like I said, my dad is my tattoo idol – so they all have a special connection to him.
- Do your research! Look at a studios artwork, and try to pick a place that specialises in the type of tattoo that you want.
- Go in and have a chat. The only way you can get a general quote, or even an idea of what they can do for you is to go in and speak to someone. Quotes are rarely given over the phone, as the level of detail, colour and size is what the price depends on.
- Trust your artist and be honest! Seventh Day – the studio I go to, typically draw up the design on the day of your tattoo, so you have to trust that they are going to understand your vision for your tattoo. If there is anything you don’t like however, they’re not going to be offended by you asking them to change anything!
- On the day of your tattoo, relax. Just remember that you want this! You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t, and you’re going to love the outcome. Enjoy the process and remember to eat before you go, as well as wear comfy clothes – chances are you’ll be lying down for your tattoo.
